Elder statesman urges Nigerians to renew hope, embrace peace and build a stronger nation together
OCTOBER 1, 2026 — As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, revered elder statesman and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the International Peace Commission, Alhaji Sadiq Mohammed Walin Ganye, has extended heartfelt goodwill to Nigerians at home and abroad, calling for a renewed national commitment to peace, justice, unity and good governance.
Widely respected for his inclusive disposition and tireless advocacy for peaceful coexistence, Walin Ganye said Nigeria’s greatest strength lies in its diversity, and in the ability of its people to rise above their differences in pursuit of a common national destiny.
Having built bridges across political, religious, ethnic and social divides, the elder statesman has earned a reputation as a trusted voice for justice and harmony, a reputation he has built without holding any political office.
He stressed that good governance must rest on fairness, accountability, equity and respect for the dignity of every citizen, urging leaders and citizens alike to place the collective good above personal and sectional interests.
“True patriotism goes beyond celebration,” he said. “It demands sacrifice, responsibility and a willingness to contribute positively to the development of our nation.”
Expressing optimism about the country’s future, Walin Ganye prayed for peace, stability and prosperity across Nigeria, and said the nation’s present challenges can be overcome through unity, dialogue and responsible leadership.
“May this Independence Day rekindle our faith in Nigeria and inspire us to build a nation where justice prevails, peace endures and every citizen has an opportunity to thrive,” he said.
The elder statesman also called on Nigerians to continue supporting initiatives that promote national unity, peaceful coexistence and inclusive development, stressing that the country’s future belongs to everyone and must be built together.
