Fathers mothers Breaks Down in Tears as Community Mourns One of the Worst Lightning Tragedies in Recent Memory

A wave of grief has swept across Ganye Local Government Area of Adamawa State following a heartbreaking tragedy in which six teenage, three were siblings reportedly killed and others critically injured after a thunderstorm struck a group of young people harvesting groundnuts on a farm.
The shocking incident, which occurred during a heavy downpour, has thrown the entire community into mourning, with residents describing it as one of the most devastating natural disasters to hit the area in recent years.
According to reliable community sources, the victims had gone to a farmland to harvest groundnuts when dark clouds suddenly gathered and rain began to fall. Rather than abandon the day’s work, the teenagers reportedly opened umbrellas and continued harvesting standing near a big tree, despite the worsening weather.
Moments later, a powerful thunderbolt accompanied by lightning struck the farmland with tremendous force.
Eyewitnesses said the deafening strike sent panic across nearby farms as workers fled for safety. By the time villagers rushed to the scene, six of the teenagers had reportedly died instantly, while other two were found lying unconscious or severely injured.
The injured victims were immediately rushed to nearby health facilities, where medical personnel are battling to save their lives.
Pioneer Newspaper gathered that the three from the same compound, the deceased teenagers were all children of a man popularly known in the community as “Soja Anguwan I Do.”
In an emotional attempt to verify the incident, our correspondent contacted the bereaved father by telephone. Although he answered the call, he was overcome with grief and could barely speak.
Between uncontrollable sobs and tears, he simply said:
“It is true… they are all dead.”
He could not continue the conversation as the pain of losing six children at once overwhelmed him.
The tragic confirmation has left many residents heartbroken, with sympathizers trooping to the family’s residence to offer condolences and comfort the bereaved parents.
The incident has sparked widespread sorrow throughout Ganye Chiefdom, where community leaders, religious bodies and residents have described the loss as unimaginable and deeply painful.
Many locals say they have never witnessed a tragedy of such magnitude involving members of a single family.
As news of the incident spread, prayers and messages of sympathy poured in from across Adamawa State, with many calling on families to exercise greater caution during thunderstorms, especially while working in open farmlands.
Experts have consistently warned that lightning poses a serious danger during rainfall, particularly in open fields. They advise that umbrellas, metal objects and isolated open spaces may increase the risk of lightning strikes, urging people to seek safe shelter immediately whenever thunder is heard.
As of the time of filing this report, local authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident or confirm the identities of all the victims. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy are expected to continue.
The heartbreaking loss has once again reminded communities of the destructive power of nature and the need for increased public awareness on lightning safety during the rainy season.
