A devastating road tragedy has plunged families, colleagues, and the nation into mourning after four members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and a military personnel lost their lives in a horrific collision along a major highway in Adamawa State.
The fatal accident occurred when a military vehicle collided with a commercial bus, triggering a catastrophic crash that caused the civilian vehicle to overturn before erupting into a raging inferno.
Eyewitness accounts described a scene of horror and helplessness as flames rapidly engulfed the bus, leaving all five occupants trapped inside. By the time emergency responders arrived, the victims had been burnt beyond recognition.
Preliminary investigations by the Adamawa State Police Command identified two of the deceased corps members as Suleiman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both natives of Kaduna State who were serving in Adamawa State under the NYSC scheme.
Police authorities confirmed that four of the passengers who perished in the commercial vehicle were serving corps members, while efforts are ongoing to establish the identities of the remaining victims and notify their families.
In a further blow, a military personnel travelling in the military vehicle also lost his life in the tragic incident, bringing the death toll to five.
Security operatives and emergency response teams swiftly mobilized to the crash scene, evacuating the remains of the victims to the Specialist Hospital in Yola, where identification procedures are continuing.
Reacting to the heartbreaking incident, the Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State, CP Kabir Umar Hassan, expressed profound grief over the loss of lives and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the NYSC community, and all those affected by the tragedy.
“The Command shares in the pain of the families and institutions that have lost promising young Nigerians and a gallant military officer in this unfortunate incident,” the Commissioner stated.
Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, with assurances that further details will be made public as inquiries progress.
The tragedy has once again reignited concerns over road safety on major highways across Adamawa State, particularly the busy routes connecting Yola to northern parts of the state, where fatal accidents have continued to claim lives.
The incident was officially confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, in a statement issued on behalf of the Adamawa State Commissioner of Police.
As families await answers and loved ones mourn their fallen sons and daughters, the tragedy stands as a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need for enhanced safety measures on Nigeria’s highways.
