Massacre in Tahoua: 46 Nigerien Soldiers Killed as Militants Overrun Military Base

Renowned security analyst and counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, has reported a devastating militant attack on the Nigerien Defense and Security Forces (SDF), resulting in the deaths of at least 46 soldiers. The assault, carried out by fighters of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS), targeted a strategic military base in Iknewane, Tilia Department, near Niger’s volatile border with Mali.

According to security sources, the attack unfolded with militant forces launching a large-scale and highly coordinated offensive, overwhelming the military outpost with superior firepower. The heavily armed insurgents swiftly overran the base, destroying or seizing nine out of the 16 military vehicles stationed there and looting weapons and ammunition.

In the aftermath, a dozen soldiers were reportedly taken hostage, while several others remain missing. Survivors described scenes of chaos, with some soldiers fleeing on foot through the arid terrain before being rescued by backup forces.

Following the deadly ambush, the Nigerien Armed Forces (FAN) and the National Guard (GNN) launched a counter-operation, deploying a convoy of about 20 military vehicles from Tahoua in a bid to track down the assailants and secure the area.

This is not the first time the Iknewane military position has come under siege. On September 18, 2024, EIGS militants carried out a similar assault, leaving at least 24 soldiers dead. The latest attack underscores the worsening security crisis in Niger’s border regions, where militant groups have intensified their assaults on both military and civilian targets.

The Tahoua Region, particularly areas bordering Mali, has become a hotspot for insurgent activities, as jihadist groups exploit the porous borders to stage deadly raids. Despite ongoing counterterrorism efforts, the Nigerien government continues to grapple with an unrelenting wave of extremist violence, raising concerns over regional stability and the effectiveness of current security measures.

As the nation mourns the fallen soldiers, the latest attack serves as a grim reminder of the persistent threat posed by militant groups in the Sahel, prompting urgent calls for enhanced military coordination and international support to curb the insurgency.
