“Peter Obi Decries Omission of North Central from 2025 Budget: Calls for Urgent Rectification”

In a powerful statement that underscores his commitment to national equity and development, former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, His Excellency Peter Obi, has voiced his concerns over the exclusion of the North Central Regional Commission from the proposed 2025 budget. Taking to his official X handle, Obi described the omission as “deeply troubling” and called for its urgent reversal, emphasizing the need for fairness and balanced development across Nigeria.

Obi noted that the proposed budget allocates a substantial N2.493 trillion to five regional development commissions, yet the North Central region—a zone grappling with dire socio-economic challenges—was glaringly omitted. He highlighted the region’s plight, pointing out that relentless terror attacks and banditry have devastated states like Plateau, Benue, Kogi, and Niger. These violent incidents have led to countless deaths, widespread displacement, and a surge in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, leaving the region one of the most vulnerable in Nigeria.

“The North Central region requires special attention due to the severe challenges it faces today. The relentless tragedies have inflicted immense suffering on the people and severely hindered progress,” Obi said.

Widely regarded as the agricultural backbone of Nigeria, the North Central plays a critical role in ensuring food security for the nation. Obi stressed that neglecting the region in such a pivotal budgetary allocation is not only unjust but also detrimental to the country’s overall stability and progress.

He urged the Federal Government and the National Assembly to urgently review and rectify this exclusion, emphasizing that addressing the region’s pressing needs is essential for fostering security, stability, and sustainable development.

“The omission of the North Central Regional Commission from the proposed budget is a glaring anomaly that does not support the even development and peace Nigeria desperately needs. This decision must be revisited for the good of the nation,” Obi asserted.

Reaffirming his vision for an equitable and inclusive Nigeria, he concluded, “Together, we must work toward a more inclusive and equitable Nigeria. A New Nigeria is not just a dream—it is POssible.”

Peter Obi’s impassioned call has reignited the debate on regional equity and the need for a development framework that leaves no region behind. As Nigerians await a response from the government and legislative bodies, Obi’s intervention has once again positioned him as a vocal advocate for justice and national progress.
