NSCDC Mining Marshals Uncover Illegal Mining Operation in Akwa Ibom, Apprehend Six Suspects

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has yet again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to combating illegal mining activities in the country. In a major breakthrough, the NSCDC Mining Marshals, acting on credible intelligence, have dismantled an illegal mining site in Akwa Ibom State and arrested six suspects in connection with the illicit activity.

Taking to its official handle on X (formerly Twitter), the NSCDC confirmed the operation, emphasizing its dedication to protecting the nation’s natural resources and ensuring compliance with mining regulations. The statement revealed that the suspects were apprehended during a well-coordinated raid, which uncovered unauthorized excavation activities posing significant threats to the environment and local communities.

The illegal mining site was reported to have been operating covertly, exploiting mineral resources without authorization. The operation not only disrupted a critical link in an illegal mining network but also sent a strong warning to others engaged in similar activities across the country.

NSCDC Commandant-General, Dr. Ahmed Audi, lauded the efforts of the Mining Marshals, reiterating the Corps’ zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining. “This operation reflects our commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s mineral wealth from exploitation and misuse. Illegal mining deprives the nation of revenue and contributes to environmental degradation. We will continue to clamp down on offenders,” he stated.

During the raid, several tools and equipment used for illegal mining were confiscated, including excavators, shovels, and trucks. The seized items are currently being examined as part of the ongoing investigation. The NSCDC further disclosed that preliminary findings indicate that the activities at the site have caused severe environmental damage, including deforestation and the contamination of nearby water sources, threatening the livelihoods of local residents.

The arrested suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation. Upon the conclusion of the investigation, they will be charged in accordance with the Mineral and Mining Act of 2007, which prescribes severe penalties for illegal mining operations.

The NSCDC urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to illegal mining. Dr. Audi emphasized that the Corps will intensify its crackdown on illegal mining nationwide, working closely with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to preserve Nigeria’s natural resources for future generations.

This latest operation is a testament to the NSCDC’s proactive measures in curbing illegal mining, ensuring that only authorized and environmentally responsible practices are upheld in the mining sector. As the nation battles resource exploitation, the Corps remains steadfast in its mission to enforce the law and safeguard Nigeria’s wealth.
