Scores of Homes and Shops Submerged, Residents Demand Urgent Government Intervention

YOLA — Panic and anguish gripped residents of Bachure, a densely populated community in Yola, Adamawa State, after a torrential overnight rainfall triggered one of the worst flooding incidents witnessed in recent times, leaving widespread destruction in its wake and rendering many families homeless.
The heavy downpour, which began late Tuesday night and continued into the early hours of Wednesday, overwhelmed existing drainage channels, sending powerful torrents of water surging through residential neighborhoods and commercial areas. Within hours, houses, shops, and major access roads were submerged, forcing frightened residents to flee for safety under the cover of darkness.
Although no fatalities had been officially reported as of the time of filing this report, the disaster left a trail of devastation. Numerous buildings suffered structural damage, several perimeter walls collapsed, household valuables were washed away, and businesses incurred significant losses after floodwaters engulfed their premises.
Residents described the incident as one of the most destructive floods the community has experienced in recent years.
“The water came with unbelievable force. Within minutes, it had entered our homes and destroyed everything we worked for. Many families have nowhere to sleep tonight,” a distressed resident told our correspondent.
Another victim, whose provision store was inundated by the flood, lamented the destruction of goods worth millions of naira.
“I had stocked my shop in preparation for the weekend market, but everything has been destroyed. We are appealing to the government to come to our rescue before our livelihoods are completely wiped out,” she said.
The flood also crippled transportation within the community as several roads became impassable, stranding commuters and motorists. Residents expressed fears that continued erosion could threaten electricity poles and other public infrastructure if urgent remedial measures are not taken.
In the aftermath of the disaster, affected residents passionately appealed to the Adamawa State Government and relevant emergency management agencies for immediate humanitarian assistance, including relief materials for displaced families.
Beyond emergency intervention, community members called for a comprehensive overhaul of the drainage system in Bachure, insisting that the recurring floods are largely the result of inadequate and poorly maintained drainage infrastructure.
“We cannot continue living in fear whenever it rains. The existing drainages are too narrow and blocked to handle the volume of water. Government must expand the current drainage network and construct new channels before another tragedy occurs,” another resident pleaded.
Environmental observers who visited the affected area attributed the flooding to a combination of exceptionally heavy rainfall, inadequate drainage facilities, and the indiscriminate disposal of refuse into waterways, which restricts the free flow of stormwater.
They warned that unless comprehensive drainage improvements are undertaken and environmental sanitation is strengthened, communities such as Bachure will remain highly vulnerable to devastating floods during the rainy season.
The experts also urged authorities to carry out immediate engineering assessments of the damaged infrastructure and commence reconstruction of critical drainage channels to prevent future disasters.
As of press time, the Adamawa State Government and relevant emergency response agencies had not issued an official statement detailing the extent of the damage or outlining relief measures for the affected victims.
With meteorological forecasts indicating the likelihood of more rainfall across Adamawa State in the coming weeks, residents of flood-prone communities have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid dumping refuse into drainage channels, and heed safety warnings issued by emergency management authorities.
For the people of Bachure, however, the immediate concern remains rebuilding shattered homes, restoring lost livelihoods, and receiving the urgent assistance needed to recover from a disaster that has left an entire community counting its losses.
