RAMADAN BLOODBATH: TERRORISTS INTENSIFY ATTACKS, BELIEVING DEATH GUARANTEES HEAVEN — DEFENCE MINISTER REVEALS

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has revealed that terrorist groups intensify their attacks during the holy month of Ramadan because many of their fighters believe dying in battle during the sacred period guarantees them entry into heaven.
The Defence Minister made the startling disclosure on Thursday while briefing journalists after a closed-door security meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The high-level meeting, which lasted nearly two hours, brought together top security chiefs to review Nigeria’s worsening security situation amid renewed insurgent attacks in the North-East.
Speaking after the meeting, Musa explained that extremist fighters exploit the spiritual significance of Ramadan to embolden their ranks and intensify violent operations.
“As usual with the terrorists during the Ramadan period, they believe that when they die, they will go to heaven. Because of that belief, they are prepared to commit any offence or even get killed, thinking there is a spiritual reward awaiting them,” Musa said.
Despite the alarming trend, the Defence Minister assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces and other security agencies had adjusted their operational strategies and were already recording significant battlefield successes against the insurgents.
According to him, Nigerian troops have in recent days launched coordinated offensives that resulted in the elimination of several terrorist commanders and the recapture of key operational bases previously used by the militants.
“We have taken over several of their locations, neutralised some of their commanders and seized critical assets used for their operations,” he said.
Musa further disclosed that President Tinubu had approved a number of fresh security measures and operational resources aimed at strengthening the fight against insurgency across the country.
“I want to assure Nigerians that the President has approved many things that are already being implemented. All the security services are working together as one team, and we remain confident that we will succeed,” the minister added.
Thursday’s security briefing also marked the first strategic meeting between President Tinubu and the country’s service chiefs since the recent appointment of Tunji Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police.
The meeting came amid growing concern over escalating attacks in Nigeria’s North-East, where insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province have recently intensified assaults on military formations and civilian communities.
For more than a decade, the insurgency has devastated the region, leaving tens of thousands dead and forcing millions from their homes, particularly across Borno State, Yobe State, and Adamawa State.
Security experts warn that the renewed attacks highlight the evolving tactics of extremist groups, who often exploit religious narratives to radicalise recruits and sustain their violent campaign.
However, Nigerian authorities insist that with intensified military pressure, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger inter-agency collaboration, the insurgents’ days are numbered.
