Borno Governor Urges Urgent Federal Intervention, Says Neglect Fueling Poverty, Insecurity
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has issued a passionate appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize the rapid development of Northern Nigeria, warning that continued neglect could have dire consequences for national unity and stability.
Speaking during a visit to Bauchi on Tuesday, Zulum painted a stark picture of the region’s challenges, saying the North has suffered decades of underdevelopment, insecurity, and infrastructural decay — all of which have crippled productivity and left millions of youths without meaningful opportunities.
“The progress of Nigeria is tied to the prosperity of every region,” Zulum declared. “Developing Bauchi and other northern states will not only strengthen our national economy but also reduce the root causes of insecurity and poverty that have held the North hostage for too long.”
The governor emphasized that the Federal Government must channel greater investments into key sectors such as agriculture, education, power supply, and industrialization, describing them as the “pillars of transformation” that can lift the region out of economic stagnation.
While commending President Tinubu’s ongoing fiscal reforms and social intervention programs, Zulum stressed that targeted policies for northern development are critical to achieving genuine national balance and cohesion.
He also called for stronger federal-state collaboration to accelerate the completion of major infrastructural projects, including road networks, irrigation systems, and industrial hubs across the North-East and North-West zones — regions hardest hit by insurgency and poverty.
Political observers have hailed Zulum’s remarks as a bold and timely reminder of the widening regional disparities threatening Nigeria’s social fabric. Many analysts say his call reflects the growing frustration among northern leaders who believe that the region’s vast potential remains largely untapped.
“If President Tinubu heeds this call,” analysts argue, “the renewed focus on Northern development could spark a new era of inclusive growth, peace, and economic stability across the federation.”
