Crisis in the Ranks: Nigerian Medical Association Slams Sanctions on Nine Doctors Over Legal Showdown

In a dramatic and unprecedented move, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has wielded the hammer of discipline, sanctioning nine of its members from Enugu and Delta states for dragging the association to court without first exploring its internal dispute resolution mechanisms.

The disciplinary action, which has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s medical community, was ratified during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and the Annual General/Scientific Conference held over the weekend in Katsina State.

Those affected by the sanctions include prominent medical practitioners such as Dr. Esther Ekwe, Dr. Sunday Okafor, Dr. Nwachukwu Ogbonna, Dr. Jude Onyia, Dr. Onyebueze John Ugochukwu, and Dr. Sam Ohaegbulam—all from Enugu State. Also sanctioned were Dr. Marcel Onochie, Dr. Samuel Agboma, and Dr. John Afam Osemen from Delta State.

According to a strongly worded communiqué jointly signed by NMA National President, Dr. Bala Audu, and National Secretary, Dr. Benjamin Egbo, the punitive measures are in line with the NMA’s constitution, specifically Article 25, Section 8.

The statement emphasized that the affected doctors “shall cease to hold any office at all levels of the Association and within any recognised professional bodies.” Additionally, they are barred from representing the NMA in any capacity—locally or nationally—and are permanently disqualified from contesting any elective position within the association.

“The NEC resolved to invoke the full weight of the constitution on members who bypassed laid-down mechanisms in pursuit of personal grievances,” the communiqué stated. “This action is intended to preserve the unity, discipline, and integrity of the NMA as the foremost professional body in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.”

This decisive step underscores the NMA’s zero-tolerance stance against actions deemed to undermine its authority or cohesion. It also highlights the growing tension within the ranks of the association, signaling a possible deepening crisis unless reconciliatory efforts are initiated.

While the sanctioned members are yet to respond publicly, analysts predict that the fallout from this move may prompt a legal and professional showdown that could test the boundaries of association governance and individual rights within professional unions.

As the medical community watches closely, many are asking: has the NMA taken a firm step toward discipline—or opened the door to deeper division?
