In a development that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to step down pending an independent investigation into allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central Senatorial District.
Akpoti-Uduaghan has accused Akpabio of victimizing her in the Senate after she rejected his alleged sexual advances. She further claimed that the Senate President had made multiple inappropriate approaches toward her, even in the presence of her husband.
Reacting to the explosive allegations, CNPP Kaduna State Chapter, through its Publicity Secretary, Ambassador Sanin Yaya, issued a strongly worded statement on Monday, stressing that public officeholders must uphold the highest ethical standards. The group warned that such allegations, if not thoroughly and transparently investigated, could erode public trust in Nigeria’s legislative institution.
The CNPP Kaduna State emphasized that an impartial inquiry is imperative to ensure credibility. The group urged the Senate Ethics and Privileges Committee to collaborate with external bodies, including civil society organizations and legal experts, to conduct a transparent investigation.
“Stepping aside is not an admission of guilt but a necessary action to uphold the integrity of the Senate and ensure a fair investigative process,” the statement read. “Any attempt to delay or politicize the matter will only deepen public distrust in the Senate’s ability to self-regulate.”
The CNPP also highlighted the broader implications of the allegations, stating that mishandling the case could set back Nigeria’s progress on gender equality and ethical governance.
Amid concerns over possible intimidation, the CNPP called on relevant authorities—including the Nigerian Police, the National Human Rights Commission, and gender-rights advocacy groups—to guarantee Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s safety throughout the investigation.
“The bravery of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan in speaking out must be commended, and her security must not be compromised,” the statement added.
The CNPP further called on the media, civil society groups, and the Nigerian public to closely monitor the case, ensuring transparency and accountability at every stage.
With mounting pressure, the coming days will determine whether Akpabio heeds the call to step aside or if the Senate will be plunged into further controversy. The unfolding drama underscores the growing demand for integrity and accountability at the highest levels of governance in Nigeria.
