Tragedy on Ore-Lagos Highway: 28 Passengers Burnt Beyond Recognition in Devastating Auto Crash

A horrific accident on the Ore-Lagos highway has claimed the lives of 28 passengers, who were burnt beyond recognition in a devastating head-on collision at Onipetsi, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The tragic incident, which occurred at Mile 49 along the busy expressway, was confirmed by the Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samuel Ibitoye. According to him, only two passengers survived the crash and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Ore.

Preliminary investigations revealed that excessive speeding and traffic violations were responsible for the catastrophic accident. The two ill-fated vehicles, reportedly traveling at high speed, collided head-on, igniting a deadly inferno that left most of the victims charred beyond recognition.

“The contract between drivers and passengers is to transport them safely to their destinations, not to drive them to their graves,” Ibitoye lamented. “Reckless driving has once again cost us precious lives.”

The FRSC commander emphasized the need for drivers to exercise patience on the highways and urged passengers to be more proactive in road safety.

“Passengers have a role to play in ensuring their safety. If a driver is overspeeding or driving recklessly, they should caution them or report to FRSC personnel on the highway,” he advised.

Aftermath of the Tragedy

The remains of the deceased victims have been deposited at the General Hospital in Ore, while the two critically injured survivors are receiving medical attention at the same facility.

Ibitoye assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine further details of the incident and prevent future occurrences.

This latest tragedy adds to the growing list of deadly road accidents in Nigeria, once again highlighting the urgent need for stricter traffic law enforcement and increased driver responsibility.
