The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched a rigorous enforcement of the mandatory Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance, in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. The operation, which commenced on February 1, 2025, aims to enhance road safety and ensure strict adherence to traffic regulations.
In a statement on Sunday, Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, declared that all vehicle owners in the FCT must now possess a valid Third-Party Insurance policy before driving on public roads. She warned that defaulters risk penalties and urged those without insurance to obtain one immediately.
The enforcement drive is designed to safeguard road users from financial losses arising from accidents. According to the police, Third-Party Insurance covers damages inflicted on another person’s vehicle, property, or bodily injury, ensuring that accident victims receive compensation without undue financial strain on motorists.
“This initiative will not only enforce compliance but also protect citizens from unexpected financial burdens due to road accidents,” the statement read.
Amid growing concerns about possible police harassment, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed officers to be professional and ethical while enforcing the directive.
“No form of harassment or extortion of motorists will be tolerated,” he stated, emphasizing that officers must carry out their duties with courtesy while remaining firm.
He also appealed for public cooperation, stressing that the ultimate goal is to ensure the safety and security of all road users in the FCT.
Authorities have reiterated that this is not a one-time operation but a continuous exercise aimed at strengthening road safety and compliance with traffic laws. Motorists are therefore urged to regularize their insurance status immediately to avoid penalties.
With this decisive move, the FCT Police Command is leaving no room for non-compliance. The message is clear: every motorist must carry a valid Third-Party Insurance policy or face the consequences.
