Enugu Court Remands Man for Severing Wife’s Hand, First Lady Vows Justice

In a case that has sent shockwaves across Enugu State, Mr. Sunday Echeji has been remanded in prison custody after allegedly severing his wife’s hand in a gruesome act of domestic violence. The horrific incident, which occurred in Ugwuogede village, Ibagwa-Agu, Nsukka Local Government Area, has ignited widespread outrage and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws against gender-based violence.

Echeji was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Enugu on January 31, 2025, facing charges of attempted murder under Section 275, Subsection A of the Criminal Code CAP 30, Vol. 1 of the Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2024. However, due to the severity of the crime, the Chief Magistrate ruled that the case be transferred to the State Department of Public Prosecution, as the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter.

Following the ruling, the accused was remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Centre pending his trial at the State High Court.

Enugu First Lady Condemns Attack, Vows Justice

Reacting to the shocking act, the First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, issued a strong statement condemning the attack and reaffirming the state government’s unwavering commitment to ending violence against women.

> “This kind of violence will not be tolerated in our state. Rest assured, we will ensure that justice is served. So, think twice before you ever think of committing such a barbaric or inhumane act or indeed any form of violence because, with this administration, you must face justice,” she declared.

In response to the incident, the Enugu State Government has intensified efforts to protect women and girls from domestic abuse. Authorities are strengthening legal frameworks, bolstering law enforcement, and expanding support systems for survivors of gender-based violence.

Meanwhile, civil society organizations and law enforcement agencies are working together to ensure that Echeji’s case serves as a landmark in the fight against domestic violence, reinforcing the state’s zero-tolerance policy on gender-based crimes.

As the case progresses to the State High Court, the people of Enugu—and indeed the nation—will be watching closely, demanding swift and decisive justice for the victim.
