Atiku Abubakar Laments Rising Highway Fire Incidents, Condoles Families of Victims

In a somber message to the nation, former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, expressed his deep concern and sorrow over the alarming spate of highway fire incidents that have claimed lives and left communities in disarray.

Taking to his official X handle, Atiku recounted the tragic occurrences of the past weekend, during which three separate fire incidents were reported across Nigeria in Niger, Oyo, and Lagos States. According to the post, the incident in Niger was the most devastating, claiming 48 lives, while Lagos saw three fatalities. Although no lives were lost in Ibadan, Oyo State, the devastation left in its wake was overwhelming, with significant destruction to property and livelihoods.

All three incidents were reportedly caused by articulated vehicles transporting petrol across the country. These recurring tragedies have reignited concerns about the safety of transporting highly flammable materials on Nigeria’s highways, as well as the growing need for stricter regulations and safety measures.

Atiku Abubakar, in his statement, extended heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones in these tragic accidents. He also expressed solidarity with trade unions whose members and assets may have been directly impacted by these disasters.

In a particularly poignant gesture, he sympathized with the farmers and travelers in Niger State, who were among the major victims, having suffered not only the loss of life but the destruction of their economic means.

Additionally, Atiku commended the bravery and swift action of the fire service officers in all three states, acknowledging their tireless efforts in containing the flames and preventing further destruction.

“While we mourn the loss of lives and property, I pray for eternal mercy for the deceased victims,” Atiku’s statement concluded, underscoring the nation’s collective grief and urging for more proactive measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
