Southern Taraba Under Siege: 102 Tiv Christians Feared Dead as Militias Torch Churches in 33 Days

Takum, Taraba State – Southern Taraba is engulfed in fear and grief as reports emerge that 102 Tiv Christians have been brutally killed and multiple churches destroyed over a span of just 33 days. The Northern Christians Religious Leaders Assembly (NOCRELA) revealed that suspected Fulani militia were behind the attacks, which occurred between 2nd January and 3rd February 2026 in Chanchanji Ward, Takum Local Government Area.
According to NOCRELA, the militant attacks specifically targeted the Tiv community and NKST churches, with local authorities confirming that more than 31 people were injured and houses burned during the violence.

Taraba State Chairman of NOCRELA, Rev. Dr. Micah Dopah, in a statement on Monday, condemned the “continuous, horrific, and brutal” killings. He described the attacks as a “terrible and dreadful act of violent criminality” that is “totally condemnable and unacceptable to Christians worldwide.”
Dr. Dopah said, “Ten murderous attacks in 33 days is horrifying. Where is the government? And where are the security agencies?” He further emphasized that laxity from authorities has emboldened the militants to carry out these “satanic killings” without fear of repercussions.

NOCRELA reported that extensive interactions with the Tiv community and affected NKST pastors revealed deep anguish. Residents and church leaders confirmed that the attacks were deliberately targeted, leaving families, congregations, and communities traumatized. Many lamented that security agencies and government officials have failed to provide adequate protection for lives, homes, and places of worship.
In a strong appeal, NOCRELA urged the government and security agencies to urgently apprehend the perpetrators and take deliberate steps to safeguard the Tiv people and NKST churches in Taraba State, particularly in Chanchanji district.
“These attacks are not only a violation of human rights but an assault on the peace and dignity of our communities. We demand immediate intervention to prevent further bloodshed,” Rev. Dopah warned.
