Nigerian Army troops of 6 Brigade, Operation Peace Shield, in collaboration with local vigilante groups, have decisively repelled coordinated attacks by armed bandits during a high-risk security escort and clearance operation across several communities in Taraba State, reinforcing the military’s resolve to safeguard lives, farmlands and rural livelihoods.
The operation commenced at about 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, when troops provided an armed escort to farmers travelling from Chanchanji to Ayu village in Donga Local Government Area, a stretch of approximately 29 kilometres, amid heightened security concerns in the axis.
After successfully ensuring the safe passage of the farmers, the troops advanced into a comprehensive clearance operation, sweeping through Daily, Mande, Jabi, Kwanta and Wayase villages, areas known for recent bandit activity.
Military sources disclosed that the troops made contact with the armed bandits at Wayase and later at Mande, where the criminals employed a desperate tactic—using cattle as moving cover while opening fire on the advancing soldiers.
“The bandits were no match for the troops’ superior firepower and tactical discipline. They were overwhelmed and forced to retreat in disarray,” a source revealed, adding that no casualty was recorded on the side of the troops.
In a further show of resilience, the troops, while in hot pursuit, encountered a roadblock mounted with felled trees by the fleeing bandits at Tseen village, an apparent attempt to stage an ambush and hinder military movement.
The soldiers swiftly executed anti-ambush drills, cleared the obstruction and secured the route, ensuring uninterrupted and safe movement along the corridor.
The successful operation has boosted confidence among local residents and farmers, who have repeatedly appealed for stronger military presence to counter banditry and protect agricultural activities in the area.
Security sources reaffirmed that Operation Peace Shield remains committed to sustaining pressure on criminal elements and restoring lasting peace across Taraba’s troubled communities.
