BREAKING: NAF Clarifies ‘Seized’ Aircraft in Burkina Faso — Says Precautionary Landing Saved Lives, Crew Safe and Preparing for Departure

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has dismissed rumours surrounding the alleged seizure of one of its C-130 Hercules transport aircraft in Burkina Faso, clarifying that the aircraft executed an emergency diversion and precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso due to a technical issue.

In an official statement issued on Tuesday, the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the aircraft was on a scheduled ferry flight to Portugal on Sunday, 8 December, when the crew detected a technical fault shortly after departing Lagos.

He noted that the flight crew, acting in full compliance with global aviation safety protocols, made an immediate judgement call to land at the nearest suitable airfield. Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso’s second-largest city, provided the safest option for the precautionary landing.

> “The decision was taken solely in the interest of safety. At no point was the aircraft ‘seized’ or subjected to hostile treatment,” Ejodame stated.

According to the NAF spokesperson, all personnel onboard are safe, secure, and have received cordial support from Burkinabè authorities since their arrival. He confirmed that technical inspections and operational checks are ongoing, adding that arrangements are being finalised for the crew to continue their journey to Portugal once cleared.

The Air Force further reassured the public that it remains committed to the highest operational and safety standards in all missions while prioritising the welfare of its personnel.

> “The Nigerian Air Force continues to uphold professionalism and global aviation norms in discharge of its constitutional duties,” the statement added.
The C-130 Hercules aircraft, a backbone of NAF’s strategic airlift operations, is widely used for troop deployment, humanitarian missions, and international engagements.
