Elderly couple’s quarrel turns deadly as police vow justice
In a grisly incident that has thrown the quiet town of Demsa into shock, a 71-year-old man, Jeriel Clifford Peter, has been arrested by the Adamawa State Police Command for allegedly stabbing and hacking his 67-year-old wife, Miltha Jeriel, to death following a heated argument at a beer parlour.
According to eyewitness accounts, what began as a verbal exchange between the elderly couple soon spiralled out of control. The suspect, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, allegedly launched a brutal attack on his wife, using both a knife and an axe to inflict multiple fatal wounds.

Panic erupted at the scene as patrons fled for safety. The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital by bystanders but was confirmed dead shortly after arrival. Her remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.
Responding to a distress call, operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Demsa Division swiftly arrived at the scene. The suspect was apprehended on the spot, and the murder weapons — a knife and an axe — were recovered.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the suspect is now in custody as investigations continue.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, condemned the act in strong terms, describing it as “unfortunate and barbaric.”
> “This is a deeply regrettable case of domestic violence. We have ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yola, to take over the matter for discreet investigation and diligent prosecution,” CP Morris said.
He warned residents against resorting to violence in resolving disputes, urging couples to seek mediation and counseling instead.
> “The Command will ensure justice is served and that no offender escapes lawful punishment,” he assured.
Residents of Demsa remain stunned by the tragic turn of events, describing the couple as long-time residents whose disagreement rarely turned violent. The incident, however, has reignited concerns over the growing rate of domestic violence in the region, especially among elderly couples.
As investigations continue, the once peaceful community grapples with the haunting reality of a love story that ended in bloodshed.
