Abuja, Nigeria — The political turf war within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Friday as the faction loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, inaugurated a new Board of Trustees (BoT), signaling a bold move to reclaim what it described as the party’s “lost moral compass.”
At a ceremony held in Abuja, factional Acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed presided over the inauguration, delivering a fiery address that accused the Senator Adolphus Wabara–led BoT of “losing moral balance” and betraying the founding values of the PDP.
> “We have come together, not merely to inaugurate a new Board of Trustees, but to renew our faith in the ideals that gave birth to this great political family — justice, fairness, inclusivity, and respect for the rule of law,” Mohammed declared to thunderous applause.
Describing the event as “a historic turning point in the life of the party,” Mohammed lamented that the PDP — once a symbol of national unity and democratic excellence — had in recent years drifted away from its core principles due to internal wrangling and compromised leadership.
> “The PDP was never just another political organization,” he said. “It was a national movement — a coalition of dreams built on the belief that democracy must unite rather than divide, build rather than break, and serve rather than dominate.”
Mohammed launched a scathing critique of the previous BoT leadership, asserting that Senator Wabara’s suspension by the Abia State chapter over alleged anti-party activities was “a painful but necessary step.”
> “The credibility of that leadership became heavily questioned,” he said. “The Board, which was meant to serve as the moral compass of our great party, instead became divided, ineffective, and morally compromised.”
He further accused the suspended National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, of betraying the party’s constitution and values, saying his tenure “chose convenience over the constitution and personal loyalty over the rule of law.”
With the new BoT inaugurated, Mohammed expressed confidence that the PDP’s Wike-aligned faction is poised to “restore integrity, order, and ideological clarity” to a party that has long been embroiled in leadership crises.
> “This is a rebirth,” he said. “A return to the PDP that once united Nigeria — not the PDP of factions and feuds, but the PDP of fairness, vision, and service.”
The development marks yet another dramatic twist in the PDP’s ongoing internal power struggle, with analysts predicting heightened tension between Wike’s camp and the party’s mainstream leadership.
Whether this new BoT will heal old wounds or deepen the divide remains to be seen — but one thing is certain: the battle for the soul of the PDP has just entered a new phase.
