Abuja — In a dramatic turn of events, Biafra agitator Nnamdi Kanu has finally complied with the directive of the Federal High Court in Abuja to file his defence in the terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government.
Kanu, who has long resisted entering his defence, was seen this morning filing his defence documents inside the courtroom — a move personally supervised by Justice James Omotosho, who had earlier ordered the court’s registry to be temporarily relocated to his courtroom to expedite the process.
The unusual arrangement followed a series of complaints by Kanu regarding delays and procedural obstacles in submitting his legal papers.
Lead counsel to the Federal Government, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), informed the court that he would receive the defence documents in open court and file the government’s response accordingly.
At press time, the filing process was still underway, with Justice Omotosho standing down proceedings for one hour to allow both parties to complete the formalities.
Until today, Kanu had repeatedly refused to open his defence, insisting that the prosecution must first produce the specific terrorism law he was alleged to have violated — a stance that had stalled the trial for months and drawn national attention.
Today’s compliance marks a significant shift in the courtroom drama that has kept Nigeria’s legal and political observers on edge — and could set the stage for one of the most closely watched trials in recent years.
