BREAKING NEWS: Federal Lawmaker Cheats Death as Gunmen Ambush Convoy in Niger State — Soldier Killed, Several Injured

Borgu, Niger State — Chaos erupted on Tuesday afternoon when suspected terrorists launched a deadly ambush on the convoy of federal lawmaker Hon. Jafaru Mohammad Ali Damisa, who narrowly escaped death in a hail of bullets along the Lumma–Babanna road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

Damisa, who represents Borgu and Agwara Federal Constituency, was en route to Babanna for an official engagement when the assailants — identified as Lakurawa terrorists, locally known as bandits — struck without warning.

Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene as gunmen opened fire indiscriminately, shattering the peace of the rural highway. In the ensuing firefight, a soldier attached to the lawmaker’s security detail was killed, while several others sustained serious injuries. Political aides and supporters also suffered varying degrees of wounds as bullets tore through windshields and punctured tires.

> “It was like a scene from a war zone,” said one witness. “They came out of nowhere and started firing at every vehicle in sight.”

The attackers reportedly vandalised at least 11 vehicles, riddling them with bullets before fleeing into the surrounding forest when reinforcements from the Forward Operating Base in Babanna arrived. The troops’ swift response forced the terrorists to abandon their assault after a fierce gunfight that lasted several minutes.

Despite the deadly confrontation, Hon. Damisa escaped unharmed, though visibly shaken by the near-death experience.

Security forces have since intensified patrols along the Lumma–Babanna corridor, as fear and uncertainty grip residents in the aftermath of the attack.

The brazen ambush has once again spotlighted the worsening insecurity in Niger State, particularly in border communities repeatedly targeted by armed groups. Local authorities have called for urgent federal intervention to prevent further loss of life and restore confidence among the people.
