There was tension in Kebbi State yesterday evening following the abduction of the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Samaila Bambu, by armed bandits in Bagudo, his hometown in Bagudu Local Government Area.
Residents told Daily Trust that the attackers invaded the community in large numbers, shooting sporadically to scare people away before taking the lawmaker to an unknown destination.
“They came on motorcycles and headed straight for the Deputy Speaker’s residence. Before security agents could react, they overpowered his guards and took him away,” a local source said.
The incident, which occurred around nightfall, threw the town into panic as residents ran for safety while calls for help went unanswered.
Confirming the development, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris, said he had received reports of the abduction and was in contact with relevant security agencies.
> “Yes, I just got the information about the alleged abduction of the Deputy Speaker in his hometown this evening. I am in touch with the Director of Security in the state. Once I get the details of what transpired, I will alert you very soon on the government’s position,” Idris said.
He added that the state government had taken immediate steps to ensure the safe return of the lawmaker.
> “I can assure you that the government is on top of the situation and will do everything possible to secure his release,” he said.
Security sources told Daily Trust that a combined team of soldiers, police officers, and local vigilantes had been deployed to comb nearby forests believed to be the bandits’ hideouts.
The abduction of Hon. Bambu has heightened fears across the state, as communities in Kebbi continue to grapple with the growing threat of banditry and kidnapping.
Residents expressed concern that the incident underscores the need for stronger security presence in rural areas, especially in border communities vulnerable to attacks.
