Political Earthquake Looms: APC Confirms Advanced Talks With Fubara, Alex Otti, Kefas, and Mutfwang To Join Ruling Party

In what appears to be a major realignment ahead of Nigeria’s next election cycle, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has hinted that at least four sitting governors from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) are in advanced negotiations to defect to its fold before the end of 2025.

The revelation was made by Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, APC’s National Vice Chairman (South-East), in an exclusive interview with The Punch.

According to Arodiogbu, the governors in question include Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, Alex Otti of Abia State, Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State — all of whom are reportedly warming up to join the ruling party in the coming months.

> “It is a strong possibility that the Plateau governor will join us, likewise his Taraba counterpart. We are also looking forward to receiving the Rivers governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State into our midst,” Arodiogbu declared confidently.

“These are all high possibilities. We expect that to happen in the coming weeks before our congresses. Most of these defections are expected before the end of this year. Once they happen, it will reaffirm that the APC remains the most dominant, organised, and attractive political platform in Nigeria today.”

He noted that the party’s open-door policy, coupled with its ongoing reform and reconciliation agenda, has made the APC a “political safe haven” for opposition leaders seeking direction and stability.

“The truth is that the APC has become a home for all progressives,” Arodiogbu continued. “We are not just expanding in numbers, but also in quality leadership. Many governors and political heavyweights have realised that the APC is the platform with the capacity to deliver genuine reforms and sustain Nigeria’s democracy.”

He further praised the national leadership of the party under its current chairman, saying the APC had built an inclusive atmosphere that encourages dialogue and participation.

> “The national chairman has made it clear that the APC will not close its doors to anyone. We are reaching out to all well-meaning Nigerians who share in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

Political analysts believe that if these defections materialise, it could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape, giving the APC a stronger foothold across the South-South, South-East, and North-Central regions — zones where opposition parties have previously held sway.

As the 2025 APC congresses and 2027 general elections draw closer, all eyes are now on the political maneuvers of these key governors — whose next moves could either fortify the ruling party’s dominance or trigger a fresh wave of political realignments nationwide.
