Tension in Kuje: Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, Collapses in Prison After Bail Denial Drama

By PoliticsNigeria

There was tension yesterday at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, after Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, reportedly collapsed inside the facility amid controversy surrounding his bail process.

Daily Trust gathered that the lawyer, who was among 13 persons arrested during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest earlier in the week, slumped after complaining of weakness and difficulty standing. Prison medical staff immediately rushed to his aid as panic spread within the centre.

Sources said his condition has worsened, prompting discussions about transferring him to a hospital for urgent medical attention.

Ejimakor’s collapse came barely 24 hours after the presiding magistrate, Abubakar Umar Sai’id, allegedly refused to sign his bail bond, despite reportedly granting bail a day earlier.

It was learnt that the group, including Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, had been tear-gassed, beaten, and detained by security operatives before being taken to the SARS facility known as “Abattoir”.

On Tuesday, they were brought before the Kuje Magistrate Court without their lawyers present. The magistrate subsequently ordered their remand and later approved bail, but allegedly failed to endorse the release documents, leaving them in custody.

Human Rights Groups Raise Alarm

Human rights advocates have condemned the development, describing it as a violation of fundamental rights and due process.

“This is a clear case of intimidation and abuse of power,” said one rights activist. “A lawyer performing his duty should not be subjected to this kind of treatment.”

Ejimakor’s supporters have since demanded his immediate medical treatment and release, warning that any delay could have fatal consequences.

The incident has reignited public anger and calls for Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom, with activists accusing security agencies of targeting individuals advocating for his release.

As of press time, correctional authorities had yet to issue an official statement on Ejimakor’s health condition or the reasons behind the delayed bail endorsement.
