Former Kano State Governor and National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has forecast that the 2027 general election will be the most hotly contested and consequential in Nigeria’s political history, hinting at possible alliances with some of the nation’s biggest political figures and parties.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Hausa to mark his 69th birthday, the former Minister of Defence said the coming election would “shake Nigeria to its core,” as citizens are now more politically conscious, economically burdened, and determined to choose leaders who can genuinely transform the country.
> “People are wiser now. They know who to vote for and who not to. Nigerians are tired of hardship and deception. They want leaders who will restore hope, security, and dignity,” Kwankwaso stated.
He noted that Nigerians are increasingly refusing to sell their votes, adding that the use of radio and social media has enlightened many voters who are now prepared to defend their choices at the ballot box.
Hints at Political Realignment
Kwankwaso dropped a major hint that the NNPP could align with key political players and parties, including President Bola Tinubu’s APC, Peter Obi, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and even former President Goodluck Jonathan, provided such collaboration is built on mutual respect and commitment to public welfare.
> “We’re ready for anyone,” he said. “But whoever we work with must show competence and integrity. The common man must benefit, youths must receive proper education, and security must be restored.”
He emphasised that while the NNPP is open to partnerships, the party would not enter into any alliance that undermines its structures or fails to advance the interest of its members.
Kwankwaso also took a swipe at the country’s political elites, accusing them of ignoring the plight of ordinary Nigerians while living in luxury in Abuja. He lamented the worsening insecurity in Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and parts of Kaduna, saying the leadership has become detached from the suffering of citizens.
> “Our people are dying every day in the North and other parts of the country. Yet those in power behave as if nothing is wrong. That is why 2027 will be different. Nigerians will surprise the politicians,” he warned.
NNPP’s Rising Influence
The NNPP founder reaffirmed that the party has grown into a national force, with credible structures and supporters across all 36 states, stressing that it is now a decisive player in Nigeria’s political future.
Kwankwaso maintained that the NNPP will only join forces with those who share its vision for credible leadership, quality education, security, and youth empowerment.
His comments have already stirred political conversations across the country, with analysts suggesting that Nigeria may witness one of its most significant realignments of power blocs ahead of the 2027 general elections.
