Says Government Fears Collapse of Its Lies if IPOB Leader Regains Freedom
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that the Federal Government is deliberately ensuring that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), does not regain his freedom alive.
In a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday, Sowore claimed that the continued detention of the separatist leader was part of a calculated effort by the authorities to preserve what he described as “the web of lies sustaining their grip on power.”
> “They do not want Mazi Nnamdi Kanu freed alive, and they are united in that mission,” he wrote. “Ever since they realised their deceit was beginning to unravel, they have intensified efforts to keep him silenced.”
Sowore further stated that the government fears Kanu’s release because it would expose, in his words, “their fraud, greed, backstabbing, and betrayal of justice.”
> “The people’s eyes have opened,” he added, “and fake political careers built on deceit, destruction, and oppression of the masses will not survive the truth.”
Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021, following his arrest and extradition to Nigeria on charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony.
Earlier in the week, Sowore led a protest in Abuja, demanding Kanu’s unconditional release. The demonstration, which attracted rights activists and members of IPOB, resulted in the arrest of several participants, including Kanu’s lawyer and his younger brother. The arrested individuals were later remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre.
Sowore’s remarks have sparked renewed debate over the federal government’s handling of Kanu’s case, with growing calls from civil society groups and international observers urging the authorities to either release him or ensure a speedy conclusion of his trial.
