In a defining moment for Nigeria’s democratic journey, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday officially swore in Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The solemn ceremony took place at exactly 1:50 p.m. inside the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where the President charged the new electoral chief to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s elections and fortify the institutional independence of the Commission.
President Tinubu, while administering the oath of office, urged Amupitan to see his new role as a sacred national duty — one that demands unwavering transparency, impartiality, and courage in strengthening public confidence in the electoral process.
> “You are stepping into a position that defines the strength of our democracy. The credibility of our elections rests on your integrity, your fairness, and your commitment to the rule of law,” Tinubu declared.
Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and respected constitutional scholar, was confirmed by the Senate last week, on October 16, following an intense and comprehensive screening session that earned him bipartisan commendation for his vast experience and reform-driven vision for the Commission.
As he assumes office, political observers and civil society groups alike have described his appointment as a “litmus test” for Tinubu’s promise of credible, technology-driven elections in Nigeria.
Amupitan is expected to immediately hit the ground running, with the upcoming Anambra State governorship election high on INEC’s agenda.
The new INEC boss succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure witnessed both praise and criticism over the 2023 general elections.
With his swearing-in now complete, all eyes are on Prof. Amupitan to restore faith in the ballot, ensure institutional independence, and chart a new path for Nigeria’s democracy.
