The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has come hard on the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that the ruling party’s desperation for defectors will not save it from defeat in 2027.
This follows comments by the APC National Chairman, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, who claimed that “key ADC figures” were set to dump their party and join the APC next week.
But in a fiery statement issued on Sunday and obtained by Daily Trust, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, dismissed the claim as “a sign of panic,” saying the APC is only scrambling to shore up its collapsing image ahead of the next general elections.
> “The scramble for membership across political lines shows that the APC has realised it is now deeply unpopular with ordinary Nigerians who resent the party for the hardship and despair it has brought upon them,” Abdullahi said.
He added that even if all the governors and senators in Nigeria joined the APC, the ruling party would still not escape the anger of the people whose lives have been ruined by its policies.
> “The truth remains that the APC has become the most hated party in Nigeria today. No amount of defections, propaganda, or backdoor alliances can save it from Nigerians whose livelihoods it has destroyed since 2015,” the ADC statement read.
The opposition party said the recent wave of defections to the APC is nothing but a “gang-up of the ruling elite against the people,” describing it as a desperate move by politicians who have failed the nation but are determined to hold on to power.
> “Nigerians understand what is happening. These defections are not about service or ideology — they are a conspiracy by the privileged few to preserve their positions while the masses continue to languish in poverty,” Abdullahi stated.
Mocking the APC Chairman’s claims, the ADC challenged him to reveal the names of the alleged “key ADC members” planning to join the ruling party.
> “We wonder if the APC has run out of governors to seduce that it now resorts to shadowy references to unnamed ADC members. If these individuals are so ‘key’, let the chairman of this most detested party be bold enough to mention their names,” the ADC quipped.
The ADC likened the APC’s current tactics to those once deployed by the PDP, warning that history would soon repeat itself.
> “This is not new. It’s the same ruinous game the PDP played at the height of its power — the same arrogance, the same blindness. The APC will also learn that real power belongs to the people, not a handful of political merchants,” the statement concluded.
Political observers say the ADC’s outburst captures growing discontent across the opposition spectrum, as parties begin to position themselves ahead of what many predict will be one of the most heated and defining elections in Nigeria’s democratic history.
