Political Earthquake in Bayelsa: Deputy Governor Ewhrudjakpo Rejects Diri’s Defection to APC — Faces Possible Impeachment Threats

NaijaNews has taken to its online official platform and announced that;

Bayelsa State’s political scene has been thrown into confusion following Governor Douye Diri’s surprise defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) — a move that his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has firmly rejected.

The deputy governor’s refusal to follow his principal into the ruling party has created tension within the state’s political establishment, with sources hinting at possible impeachment threats against him from pro-APC lawmakers.

According to reports, Ewhrudjakpo, along with former Governor Seriake Dickson and other PDP stalwarts, has maintained unwavering loyalty to the opposition party, insisting that the PDP remains strong and relevant both in Bayelsa and nationally.

A party insider who spoke to Daily Post said the deputy governor’s decision reflects the determination of committed PDP members to stand by the platform that brought them to power.

> “The Deputy Governor, Ewhrudjakpo, and one of our leaders, Seriake Dickson, including other former lawmakers in our party, are still with the PDP. We’re going nowhere,” the source stated.

Governor Diri announced his resignation from the PDP on Wednesday through his spokesman, Daniel Alabrah, without disclosing the reasons behind his defection. However, sources within Government House suggest that the governor’s move was driven by strategic political considerations ahead of the 2027 elections and a desire to align more closely with the federal government.

It was gathered that Ewhrudjakpo did not attend the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting where the governor formally announced his defection — a deliberate signal of his non-alignment.

> “Earlier this morning, Diri presided over the SEC meeting, but the deputy governor refused to attend. He didn’t attend because he’s not defecting alongside the governor,” a source disclosed.

Meanwhile, lawmakers loyal to Diri in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly are said to be considering impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor, citing “gross misconduct” for refusing to defect with his principal.

Another legislative source said,

> “We expect that the Assembly will move against him for his choice. If he’s victimised for remaining in the PDP, he may be forced to make difficult political decisions.”

Ewhrudjakpo, a lawyer and former senator representing Bayelsa West, has been a long-standing member of the PDP and one of its most trusted figures in the state. His stance, according to analysts, could reshape the internal political dynamics in Bayelsa and test the resilience of the PDP’s structure in the South-South region.

Observers say the unfolding situation may trigger a political realignment in the state, with both camps weighing their options ahead of the next electoral cycle.

For now, Bayelsa remains a hotbed of political uncertainty, as the deputy governor’s defiance pits loyalty against power in a state already known for its intense political rivalries.
