A night that began with pleasure ended in tragedy as a Customs officer, Assistant Superintendent of Customs (ASC) Lawal Tukur, was found dead in a Katsina hotel room after allegedly spending the night with three women.

The shocking incident occurred on October 15 at Murjani Hotel in the Katsina metropolis. Hotel staff reportedly made the grim discovery around 8:30 a.m., after the officer failed to check out or respond to repeated calls from reception.

Upon entering the room, staff found Tukur’s lifeless body sprawled on the bed. Disturbingly, empty sachets of suspected substances were discovered in the waste bin, raising suspicions of drug use or poisoning.

According to multiple sources, the late officer had lodged with two women identified as Khadija Ali (34) of Dutsin Amare Quarters, Katsina, and Aisha Lawal (30) of Ingawa Local Government Area. A third woman, Hafsat Yusuf (22) of Brigade Quarters, Kano, reportedly joined them later that night and also secured a separate room in the same hotel.

Sources disclosed that Khadija and Aisha spent the night with the deceased, while Hafsat visited intermittently before the officer’s sudden death was discovered the following morning.

The officer’s remains were conveyed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Katsina, where doctors confirmed him dead. His body has since been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy, as investigators try to unravel the mystery behind his sudden demise.

Officials of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have been notified of the development, while the Katsina State Police Command has launched a full investigation. The three women and some hotel staff have reportedly been taken into custody for questioning.

A top security source described the death as “highly suspicious”, noting that all possibilities — including drug overdose, poisoning, or cardiac arrest — are being considered.

The incident has sparked widespread shock and speculation among residents and colleagues, with many calling for a transparent investigation to determine what truly transpired behind the closed doors of Room 204 at Murjani Hotel.
