PDP Storms Over Betrayal: Imo, Abia Chairmen Suspended For Allegedly Plotting With APC To Derail Convention

The simmering crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a dramatic turn as the forum of state chairmen wielded the big stick, suspending two of its members over alleged anti-party activities and a plot with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to frustrate the opposition party’s forthcoming national convention.

The decision, described as a move to “protect the soul of the party,” was reached on Tuesday during a heated meeting of the forum at the PDP FCT secretariat in Abuja, chaired by Acting Secretary Edward Percy Masha.

Those affected by the suspension are Austine Nwachukwu, Chairman of Imo PDP, and Amah Abraham Nnana, Chairman of Abia PDP.

In a communiqué jointly signed by Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of Edo PDP and now elected Chairman of the forum, alongside Masha, the two were accused of colluding with powerful elements within the APC to destabilize the PDP ahead of its November 15–16 national convention.

According to the communiqué, the duo allegedly filed a court injunction seeking to stop the convention — an act the forum described as “a betrayal of trust and a gross violation of the party’s collective resolve to rebuild and reposition the PDP.”

> “Their actions represent a calculated attempt to sabotage our unity, weaken our internal democracy, and hand undue advantage to our political opponents,” the statement read.

The forum said it would not tolerate acts of indiscipline or sabotage from any member, warning that anyone caught undermining the party’s progress would face similar sanctions.

During the meeting, the forum deliberated extensively on the state of the opposition, the unity of the PDP, and preparations for the convention expected to redefine the party’s leadership structure.

It also accused the APC of engaging in “undemocratic, desperate, and coordinated attempts” to lure PDP governors, lawmakers, and critical stakeholders into defection — a move the forum described as “a dangerous slide toward a one-party state.”

> “The ruling party’s conduct is an assault on democracy and a reckless attempt to stifle credible opposition in Nigeria,” the communiqué stated.

A vote of confidence was subsequently passed on the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), the PDP Governors’ Forum, and all statutory organs of the party for their resilience and leadership amid what it called “sustained political attacks.”

Reaffirming its commitment to party unity and reform, the forum vowed to continue supporting the PDP’s national leadership to “rebuild trust, restore integrity, and reassert the party as a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.”

The communiqué concluded with a rallying appeal to members across the country to remain calm, united, and steadfast despite provocations and distractions, insisting that the PDP remains “Nigeria’s strongest hope for democratic redemption.”
