PDP CRISIS DEEPENS: SENATOR KAILA DAHUWA DEFECTS TO APC, LEAVES PARTY REELING WITH ONLY 27 SENATORS

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) suffered yet another major setback on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, as Senator Kaila Dahuwa Samaila representing Bauchi North announced his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and read during plenary, Senator Kaila blamed his defection on what he described as “the unending internal crisis and lack of direction within the PDP.”

The defection, which sent shockwaves across the political space, further diminishes the PDP’s strength in the Red Chamber — reducing its number from 28 to 27 senators.

With this latest switch, the political configuration of the 10th Senate now stands as follows: APC — 74 senators; PDP — 27; Labour Party (LP) — 4; All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) — 2; New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) — 1; and Social Democratic Party (SDP) — 1, bringing the total to 109 members.

Senator Kaila’s move is widely seen as another major blow to the PDP’s quest to regain its footing ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political observers say it underscores the party’s deepening internal cracks and the growing influence of the ruling APC in the National Assembly.

While PDP leaders are yet to officially respond, sources within the party describe the defection as “a wake-up call” to urgently resolve lingering leadership disputes threatening its unity.

Meanwhile, jubilant APC lawmakers reportedly welcomed Senator Kaila into their fold, describing his decision as “a move in the right direction.”
