The Nigerian Army has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of one of its young and promising officers, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, who succumbed to severe burns sustained in a mysterious fire incident in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
According to Punch Newspaper, the incident occurred on September 22, 2025, within the 2 Brigade Headquarters of the Nigerian Army, and has since sparked grief and concern across the military community.
In a statement issued on Friday by Captain Lawal Muhammad, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 2 Brigade, Haruna was immediately rushed to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), where a team of medical experts battled tirelessly to save his life. Sadly, despite intensive care, the gallant officer passed away on October 6, 2025, after days of fighting for survival.
“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets the unfortunate loss of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, a dedicated and disciplined officer whose service to the nation will be remembered with honor,” Captain Muhammad stated.
He described Haruna’s death as “a painful blow not only to his colleagues and family but to the entire Nigerian Army and the nation at large.”
Captain Muhammad further revealed that an internal board of inquiry has been inaugurated to determine the cause of the fire and the circumstances leading to the tragic incident.
> “The Nigerian Army remains unwavering in its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and the welfare of its officers and men. We assure the public that every effort is being made to unravel the facts surrounding this unfortunate occurrence,” he added.
The statement also conveyed the Army’s appreciation to the public for their prayers, sympathy, and support during this difficult time, emphasizing that transparency and accountability will guide the ongoing investigation.
Lt. Haruna’s colleagues have described him as “brave, selfless, and passionate about his calling,” while family members remain devastated by the sudden loss.
The late officer’s body has been deposited at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital morgue pending further arrangements, as the Army prepares to give him a hero’s farewell befitting his service to the nation.
