A ValueJet chartered aircraft conveying Nigeria’s Super Eagles to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, for their crucial final FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Benin Republic, was forced to make an emergency landing after the pilot detected a cracked windscreen midair.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the development on Saturday, revealing that the flight carrying players and officials was delayed after what sources described as a “close call that could have ended in disaster.”
According to a top NFF official who was onboard, the aircraft had departed South Africa en route to Uyo when the pilot noticed a serious fault on the windscreen, prompting an immediate diversion and emergency landing at a nearby airport for safety checks.
> “It was a tense moment for everyone on board,” the official told Sahara Reporters. “The pilot handled the situation professionally, and thankfully, we all landed safely. But it could have been much worse.”
The incident has caused a slight delay in the Super Eagles’ arrival for Tuesday’s high-stakes encounter in Uyo, where the fate of Nigeria’s World Cup dream hangs in the balance.
Qualification Race Heats Up
The battle for supremacy in Group C of the African qualifiers is now down to the wire, with Benin Republic, South Africa, and Nigeria all still in contention for the group’s sole automatic ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After Friday’s round of matches, Benin Republic top the table with 17 points, followed by South Africa with 15 points, while Nigeria sit third on 14 points.
South Africa’s Bafana Bafana missed the chance to seal early qualification after being held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe in Durban — a result that blew the group wide open. Hugo Broos’ men must now defeat Rwanda in their final game to keep their hopes alive.
For Nigeria, the showdown in Uyo is nothing short of a final. The Super Eagles must secure all three points against Benin Republic to stand any chance of booking a ticket to North America 2026 — and after their narrow escape in the air, fans are hoping that same fighting spirit will carry them safely to victory on the ground.
