Kano Court Sends Popular TikToker Mai Wushirya To Prison Over “Indecent” Viral Video — Female Partner Declared Wanted

Social Media Star Faces Two-Week Remand As Censorship Board Moves To Arrest Woman Featured In Controversial Clip

A Magistrate Court sitting in Kano has ordered the remand of popular TikTok entertainer Ashiru Idris, better known by his stage name Mai Wushirya, over allegations of sharing “indecent and immoral” videos featuring a dwarf woman, sparking outrage across the conservative northern state.

Presided over by Magistrate Halima Wali of Court No. 7, the court on Monday directed that the social media influencer be remanded in a correctional centre for two weeks pending the continuation of his trial.

The embattled TikToker, who commands thousands of followers across social media platforms, was arrested last week by officials of the Kano State Censorship Board after a series of videos surfaced online showing him half-naked and engaging in acts the board described as “immoral, indecent, and demeaning.”

According to the Board, the viral clips violate the Kano State Censorship Laws, which prohibit the production, possession, or distribution of obscene and sexually suggestive content.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the ruling, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, Public Relations Officer of the Censorship Board, said the court also issued a summons for the woman featured in the video to appear before the next sitting.

> “The court has directed that the woman involved in the indecent videos must appear before the continuation of the hearing. Even before we arraigned him, we urged Mai Wushirya to cooperate in locating her, but he refused. Now that the court has given a clear order, we will ensure she is brought to face justice,” Sulaiman said.

He further disclosed that intelligence reports suggested the woman had fled to Zamfara State immediately after the videos went viral.

> “We have credible information that she escaped to Zamfara. However, our operatives are working closely with security agencies to ensure she is apprehended and brought to Kano to face prosecution alongside the TikToker,” he added.

Mai Wushirya, known for his bold, comedic, and sometimes controversial skits, has built a reputation as one of Kano’s most followed TikTok personalities. His content often stirs public debate, testing the limits of entertainment and morality in a deeply conservative environment.

The court adjourned the case for two weeks, during which further investigation and the woman’s possible arrest are expected to shape the next phase of the prosecution.

As the trial unfolds, it continues to ignite discussions around social media responsibility, freedom of expression, and cultural values in northern Nigeria — where digital influence increasingly collides with traditional norms.
