Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has declared that the dark days of Nigeria being branded the “most corr¥pt country” in the world are gone for good, insisting that the global image of Africa’s largest democracy is now on the rise.
Mrs. Tinubu made the assertion on Sunday during her official visit to Gombe State, where she commissioned a series of health projects, including the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Kumo. She urged Nigerians at home and abroad to stop demeaning the country with negative stereotypes, stressing that the world is beginning to see Nigeria differently under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
> “Gone are the days when they say Nigeria is the most corr¥pt country. You won’t hear that again,” the First Lady declared. “When I travel abroad and they hear you’re from Nigeria, everyone is interested. Nigeria is now the next destination.”
During her tour, Mrs. Tinubu paid homage to the Emir of Akko, describing Gombe’s landscape as “beautiful and comparable to the English countryside.” She urged Nigerians to take pride in their country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, rather than focusing solely on its challenges.
Linking patriotism to government reforms in security, education, health, and grassroots development, the First Lady emphasized the vital role of traditional and religious leaders in shaping national consciousness.
> “I’m 65 years old now, and I pray to live long. I’m working so hard so that when my husband finishes his tenure, I too can walk around safely. That is what drives me.”
Mrs. Tinubu further encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful, united, and supportive of ongoing reforms aimed at restoring the nation’s pride and strengthening its position in the global community.
Her message, delivered with candour and optimism, comes at a time when the administration is under pressure to deliver on its promises. By affirming that the era of Nigeria being branded the world’s most corrupt nation is over, the First Lady sought to inspire citizens to embrace a renewed spirit of patriotism and faith in the country’s future.
