Benin City, Oct. 5, 2025 — A dramatic road crash in Edo State has left three mobile police officers attached to the Lagos State Police Command seriously injured after their patrol vehicle somersaulted while allegedly on an “illegal assignment” to the South-East.
The incident, which occurred around 12:20 p.m. on Sunday along the Benin–Agbor expressway near Uvwe community, involved a white Toyota Hilux van with registration number FKJ 445 HK (Lagos). Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle lost control, veered off the road, and overturned several times before plunging into the bush.
According to a preliminary signal from the Ugoneki Police Outpost, the officers inside the vehicle — Inspector Abubakar Mohammed, Sergeant Usman Abdul, and the driver, Emmanuel Osas — sustained severe injuries. The inspector suffered a fractured thigh, while the sergeant was initially unconscious but later revived after emergency treatment at Abudu Health Centre.
At the crash site, security operatives recovered two high-calibre weapons: an AK-47 rifle (No. NK344711) loaded with 20 rounds of live ammunition, and an FMC rifle with two magazines containing 14 live and two expended rounds. The arms have since been secured at the Abudu Divisional Police Headquarters.
Investigations have revealed that the three policemen are attached to Mobile Police Squadron 2, Lagos, but were allegedly traveling outside their jurisdiction without official clearance. Police sources disclosed that the officers declined to provide their AP and F/No during initial interrogation, further raising suspicion about their mission.
“Their rifles are in safe custody with the DPO Abudu, while the Hilux van has been towed to Ugoneki Police Outpost for safekeeping. Further updates will follow as investigations progress,” a police source confirmed.
This incident has reignited concerns about rogue police operations and unauthorized deployments across state lines. Questions are now being asked about how officers allegedly on illegal duty were able to procure arms, a patrol vehicle, and embark on a mission outside Lagos without clearance from higher command.
As the investigation deepens, pressure is mounting on the Lagos State Police Command and Force Headquarters to explain the true nature of the assignment that nearly claimed the lives of its own men.
