Lagos, Nigeria — Fiery preacher and political voice, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has stirred national debate with his declaration that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s rise to power was orchestrated by the hand of God.
Speaking at the maiden edition of the Citadel School of Governance Dialogue Series in Lagos, themed “Nigeria at 65: Historical Reflections, Futuristic Projection,” the Citadel Global Community Church founder said Tinubu’s political journey cannot be explained without divine providence.
> “If God wants to remove ‘Emilokan,’ He knows how to do it. You can’t get the kind of thing Tinubu has brought without God’s support,” Bakare thundered, sending murmurs across the hall.
Bakare, who was instrumental in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also dismissed speculations linking him with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). According to him, despite sustained pressure from high-ranking politicians — including a former governor, a minister, and even close political allies — he would not abandon the APC for another platform.
> “There has been a lot of pressure on me to join ADC. They come to my house, they call me abroad, they say they need my voice. Even one of my younger associates in APC, who benefitted greatly from the party, tried to persuade me. But I told them no,” Bakare revealed.
The cleric explained that his loyalty to the APC stems from his role in its creation, likening a defection to patricide.
> “You don’t birth a child called APC and then try to kill it yourself. I wish ADC well, because Nigeria needs a robust opposition. But I will not be part of it. We are not going to have another Awolowo–Akintola crisis in the South-West,” he said.
Bakare’s remarks have added fresh weight to the political discourse around Tinubu’s presidency, intertwining faith, power, and Nigeria’s fragile party system.
