The Fulani community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State has raised alarm over what they described as persistent and unprovoked attacks on herders and their livestock, warning that continued silence from authorities could escalate into a major crisis.
In a strongly worded statement signed by the group’s Secretary, Abdullahi Yusuf, the community condemned the latest assault, which reportedly occurred on Thursday, October 2, 2025, around Rim community, Rim Ward, Riyom LGA.
According to Yusuf, suspected Berom youths ambushed a Fulani herder, Aliyu Sale Shehu, inflicting life-threatening gunshot injuries on him. In the same attack, one cow was killed while eight others sustained serious gunshot wounds.
“This was yet another unprovoked attack on our people and livelihood,” the statement read. “The Fulani community in Riyom Local Government wishes to draw the attention of the public and authorities to these coordinated assaults which continue to go unchecked.”
The herders lamented that despite repeated reports of violence, both the Plateau State Government and community leaders have remained silent, a development they say emboldens attackers and deepens the suffering of innocent herders.
“They attack our people mercilessly, and when some herders attempt to defend themselves, they are immediately tagged bandits or aggressors. This narrative is unfair, dangerous, and unjust,” Yusuf stressed.
He further accused the government of neglecting its constitutional duty to protect all citizens, warning that the patience of the Fulani community is wearing thin.
“We demand urgent intervention from security agencies. The Plateau State Government must rise to the occasion before these hostilities plunge the area into uncontrollable bloodshed,” the statement continued.
Reiterating their position, the Fulani leaders declared:
“The Fulani are equal citizens of Riyom and Plateau State. Our lives and properties deserve protection. Enough is enough!”
