In a dramatic courtroom showdown in New York, American music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs was on Friday sentenced to 50 months in federal prison after being convicted on prostitution-related charges.
The 55-year-old hip-hop icon, once celebrated as a trailblazer in the entertainment industry, faced prosecutors who had pressed for an 11-year sentence, citing his lack of remorse and continued arrogance even after conviction.
“This is not a person who has accepted responsibility,” prosecutor Christy Slavik told the court. “His remorse was qualified. It’s as though he thinks the law doesn’t apply to him.”
Judge Arun Subramanian, however, settled on a four-year, two-month sentence, rejecting both the government’s request for more than a decade in prison and the defense’s plea for just 14 months—time already served.
According to Slavik, Combs had even lined up speaking engagements in Miami next week in expectation of a lighter sentence—an act she described as “the height of hubris.”
The verdict followed a fiery two-month trial in which jurors acquitted Combs of the most severe charges—sex trafficking and racketeering—which could have landed him a life sentence.
Combs, visibly shaken, addressed the court, offering an apology for his conduct and telling the judge he was “scared to death” of being separated from his six children and his mother, all of whom were present in court and submitted letters of support.
“I will never commit a crime again,” the Bad Boy Records founder vowed.
But the prosecution pushed back hard, pointing to a letter from Combs’s former girlfriend, Casandra Ventura, who urged the court not to overlook “the many lives that Sean Combs has upended with his abuse and control.”
The sentence marks a stunning fall from grace for one of hip-hop’s most influential figures, who once stood atop the global music industry.
