TRAGEDY IN BENIN: Edo NSCDC Commandant Slumps, Dies After Delivering Keynote Address

By Daily Trust

Benin City—Tragedy struck in Edo State on Thursday as the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Gbenga Agun, suddenly slumped and died while attending an official event in Benin City.

Agun, who was a guest speaker at a programme organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates, had just concluded delivering his keynote address when he collapsed to the shock of dignitaries and attendees.

Eyewitnesses said the Commandant was immediately rushed to the Military Base Hospital along Airport Road, where doctors battled to revive him. Sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Attempts to reach the state NSCDC spokesperson, Efosa Ogbegbor, proved unsuccessful, as several calls went unanswered. However, a senior officer at the command, who spoke under anonymity, confirmed the development, describing Agun’s sudden demise as “a devastating loss to the Corps and the entire Edo State security architecture.”

The National Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Babawale Afolabi, also confirmed the death in a phone conversation, expressing deep sorrow over the incident.

Until his death, Gbenga Agun was known as a committed security officer who contributed immensely to peace and stability efforts in Edo State. His passing leaves a vacuum in the fight against insecurity in the region.
