The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has thrown down the gauntlet to political enemies and contractors angered by his sweeping reforms in Abuja, warning that no amount of blackmail or ethnic propaganda will stop him from cleaning up the system.
Speaking at the launch of a hybrid solar lighting project in the capital, Wike blasted those he described as “professional looters” who enriched themselves under previous administrations through fraudulent maintenance contracts. He said unlike the past, where funds vanished under the excuse of “repairs,” the new project will be run directly by the company responsible, ensuring transparency and accountability.
The fiery minister predicted that those who once fed fat on loopholes will soon launch coordinated attacks, disguising their grievances under the cloak of ethnicity and religion.
“Ethnicity will come in. They will say, ‘They did it because I’m the Igbo man supplying all the cables. I’m the Igbo man supplying the generators.’ Then they will send people to social media and radio stations to insult and lambast us,” Wike declared, his voice brimming with defiance.
He dismissed such plots as the desperate antics of corrupt beneficiaries of a broken system, vowing that his administration will not retreat.
“Let them rant. Let them cook up lies. We will not be distracted. Abuja belongs to Nigerians, not a cartel of contractors. We are determined to deliver projects that work, and nothing — not blackmail, not propaganda — will stop us,” he thundered.
Wike’s remarks come as his tough style in the FCT continues to spark heated political battles, with allies praising his reforms and critics accusing him of arrogance. But if his words are anything to go by, the minister is ready for war with entrenched interests — and he’s not blinking.
