Nationwide Crackdown: Police Begin Strict Enforcement of Tinted Glass Permits

The Nigeria Police Force has officially commenced a nationwide clampdown on vehicles with tinted glass without valid permits, in a move authorities say is aimed at curbing crime and tightening national security.

Commissioner of Police in Zamfara State, Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba, who announced the enforcement in Gusau on Thursday, said the exercise was in strict compliance with the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004.

“The grace period previously granted for motorists to obtain or renew their Tinted Glass Permits has now expired. Consequently, all vehicles with tinted glass must present valid and verifiable documents when requested by enforcement officers,” Maikaba declared.

According to him, driving a vehicle with tinted glass without a government-issued permit now constitutes an offence punishable by law.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Yazid Abubakar, added in a statement that the enforcement would begin in Zamfara, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), before spreading across the country.

He warned that defaulters risk vehicle impoundment, hefty fines, and possible legal prosecution.

“Motorists are strongly advised to comply with this directive. It is not merely a legal obligation but a collective duty in safeguarding public safety and national security,” Abubakar said.

The command further appealed to citizens for maximum cooperation with enforcement teams, stressing that the initiative was designed to check criminal elements who often exploit tinted vehicles to perpetrate kidnappings, armed robberies, and other violent crimes.

With the new directive in full force, Nigerians who still cruise the highways with illegally tinted windows may now face a rude awakening.
