Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has spoken on the ongoing detention of some native doctors in the state, making it clear that his administration will not interfere in judicial processes.
Governor Soludo, who addressed the matter on Thursday, said the traditional medicine practitioners in custody must undergo due legal process to determine whether they are guilty or innocent of the charges against them before any consideration for release can be made.
“The rule of law must prevail. Nobody is above the law, and no one will be condemned without a fair trial. If they are innocent, the courts will declare them free; if otherwise, the law will take its course,” the governor stressed.
The governor’s stance comes amid mounting pressure from various quarters, including traditional rulers and cultural groups, calling for the unconditional release of the detained native doctors.
While acknowledging the importance of culture and tradition in Anambra society, Soludo maintained that his administration cannot compromise justice or bend the law in favour of any group. He assured the people of the state that his government is committed to fairness, justice, and the protection of human rights.
Observers say this development may spark fresh debates across the state, as many believe the native doctors play significant cultural roles. However, Soludo has drawn a firm line between cultural sentiments and the sanctity of the judicial process.
