Owerri, the Imo State capital, erupted in fanfare on Tuesday as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived to commission a string of landmark projects executed by Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration — projects the President described as “monuments of visionary and impactful leadership.”
The highlight of the historic visit was the formal inauguration of the Owerri–Mbaise–Umuahia Road, a strategic inter-state route linking Imo and Abia States. The road, long plagued by neglect and decay, is now expected to ease transportation, spur commerce, and inject fresh momentum into the economic activities of the South-East region.
President Tinubu also unveiled a cocktail of signature projects that underscored Uzodimma’s infrastructure-driven governance agenda, including:
The Asumpta Flyover, designed to decongest traffic in the ever-busy Owerri metropolis.
The Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Conference Centre, a world-class edifice poised to host national and international gatherings.
The Imo Digital Learning Centre, a cutting-edge facility that will power the state’s march into a knowledge-driven economy.
The refurbished Imo Concorde Hilton Hotel, revived to reposition the state as a hub for tourism, business, and hospitality.
The commissioning was graced by a galaxy of political heavyweights. Leading the delegation of dignitaries was Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. He was joined by Governors Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Ahmed Namadi (Jigawa), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto), Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), and Uba Sani (Kaduna), among others.
Addressing the jubilant crowd, President Tinubu commended Uzodimma for translating vision into reality, stressing that infrastructure remains the backbone of national growth.
> “Governor Uzodimma has demonstrated what true leadership means — leadership that leaves enduring footprints. These projects will serve not just Imo State, but the entire South-East and Nigeria at large,” Tinubu declared.
In his remarks, Governor Uzodimma dedicated the projects to the people of Imo, pledging to deliver more life-changing initiatives.
> “Our commitment is unshakable. We will continue to pursue projects that uplift our people, strengthen our economy, and secure the future of our dear state,” he assured.
With Tuesday’s inauguration, Owerri did not just welcome the President — it witnessed a bold statement of partnership between the federal and state governments, and a clear sign that infrastructure remains the currency of progress in Nigeria.
