Abuja — In a surprising move, the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the cancellation of the traditional military parade for Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, earlier scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued late Monday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).
According to the statement, the cancellation does not in any way water down the importance of Nigeria’s milestone celebration. Instead, the government emphasized that all other commemorative activities will proceed as planned, albeit without the symbolic parade usually held at Eagle Square in Abuja.
> “The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary. The government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm,” Imohiosen stated.
While no specific reasons were given for the decision, sources within government circles hinted that the move could be linked to ongoing economic reforms, security considerations, and a desire to host a more modest but symbolic anniversary.
Imohiosen further expressed government’s regret over the development, assuring Nigerians, the diplomatic corps, and invited dignitaries of the administration’s unwavering commitment to national unity and progress.
> “The Government deeply regrets any inconvenience caused by this cancellation and appreciates the understanding, support, and cooperation of all Nigerians,” the statement added.
He also urged citizens to rally behind President Tinubu’s reform agenda, which he described as a bold pathway to repositioning Nigeria for greatness in its next phase of nationhood.
The cancellation marks the first time in recent history that Nigeria’s Independence Day will be observed without the iconic military parade—a tradition that has long symbolized national pride and sovereignty.
