In a deeply emotional revelation, Bishop David Oyedepo, founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners Chapel), has recounted one of the most heartbreaking experiences of his decades-long ministry—an episode that left him in tears and shaped his resolve to pursue the gospel without compromise.
According to Oyedepo, the incident occurred many years ago when he humbly approached the pastor of another denomination to request the use of an abandoned church facility for a crusade. To his utter shock, the request was denied. Instead of offering support, the pastor bluntly declared: “You are not preaching the same Christ we are preaching.”
The statement, Oyedepo said, pierced his heart and drove him to tears. “I wept bitterly that day,” he recalled, emphasizing that his mission has never been about rivalry, self-promotion, or attacking denominations, but about a singular passion: winning souls for Christ.
“I have never preached against any church in my life, and I will never do so. Christ is not divided,” he insisted, warning against the dangers of sectarianism and bitterness within the Christian fold.
The revelation, which has sparked conversations across the Christian community, highlights the enduring challenges of denominational rivalry, ego clashes, and distrust that often undermine the unity of the church in Nigeria and beyond.
Many believers and church leaders have since weighed in, stressing that the gospel loses its power when ministers turn on one another instead of working together to advance the Kingdom of God.
For Bishop Oyedepo, however, that painful rejection only deepened his conviction to remain focused on the mandate God placed upon him. Today, Living Faith Church has grown from its humble beginnings into one of the largest Christian movements on the African continent, with branches in over 60 nations worldwide.
