Port Harcourt, Nigeria – Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has fired his first major salvo since reclaiming office, dissolving the Rivers State Pensions Board and directing the Accountant General of the State to immediately take over its functions.
The announcement, contained in a Special Government Notice signed by the State Head of Service, Mrs. Inyingi Brown, late Friday, signals what political watchers describe as the governor’s first bold move to “reset” governance in Rivers State following months of turbulence and suspension.
> “The Executive Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has approved the immediate dissolution of the Rivers State Pensions Board. Consequently, the Office of the Accountant General of Rivers State, henceforth, will handle the functions of the Board,” the notice read.
In what appears to be a zero-tolerance order, the dissolved board members were instructed to immediately surrender all government assets and properties in their possession to the Director of Administration of the Board.
“This directive takes effect immediately,” the statement stressed, underscoring the governor’s no-nonsense posture.
Governor Fubara assured that a new board would be constituted in due course to properly manage the affairs of retirees and pensioners across the state.
“The Executive Governor will, in due course, constitute a new board to manage the affairs of pensions,” the circular added, bringing a ray of hope to thousands of pensioners eagerly waiting for reforms in the sector.
First Bold Step Since Reinstatement
This decisive move is the first official action taken by Governor Fubara since his reinstatement on September 18 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who intervened to end the prolonged Rivers political crisis.
Analysts say the decision not only reasserts the governor’s authority but also signals the beginning of sweeping reforms across critical state institutions.
With this bold step, Governor Fubara has effectively drawn the battle lines, declaring his readiness to restructure governance in Rivers and reassert civilian control after months of political turbulence.
