The political atmosphere in Rivers State is heating up once again as pressure mounts on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). But the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not taking the matter lightly.
Timothy Osadolor, Deputy National Youth Leader of the PDP, has issued a strong caution to the governor, warning that defecting to the APC would amount to “throwing away his hard-earned goodwill before Rivers people.”
Speaking in an interview with Punch, Osadolor said the Rivers electorate deliberately chose Fubara on the PDP platform and that abandoning the party would be a betrayal of trust.
> “The Rivers people who freely elected and gave him their mandate to represent them as governor saw the APC on the ballot, yet they voted for Sim on the PDP platform. For him to now defect under the guise of political survival will be a monumental mistake. He would be discarding the goodwill and confidence reposed in him by his people,” Osadolor stressed.
According to him, the governor’s loyalty should remain with the people and the party that gave him the mandate, not with “political opportunists” seeking to destabilize the state.
He added that Fubara’s best way to show gratitude to Rivers citizens was not by jumping ship, but by delivering “good governance, accountability, and transformational leadership that posterity will judge him by.”
On the wider crisis rocking Rivers, Osadolor lashed out at President Bola Tinubu over the imposition of emergency rule measures in the state, describing the introduction of a military administrator as “a brazen assault on democracy and a rape of the constitution.”
> “The suspension of Governor Fubara was actually orchestrated by President Tinubu. Rather than apologising to Nigerians, he is trying to rationalise the illegality perpetrated on Rivers people. That singular act is a dangerous precedent and a serious threat to our democracy,” Osadolor declared.
With the APC dangling its political structure before Fubara and the PDP mounting pressure to keep him in the fold, all eyes are now on the Rivers governor as he navigates one of the most decisive moments of his political career.
